Long Island

Blue-Hole-Long-Island.jpg-nggid03126-ngg0dyn-360x0x60-00f0w010c010r110f110r010t010Long Island Bahamas Real Estate

Long Island like it’s name implies is 80 miles long but merely 4 miles wide at its broadest point and it is haven for sea-lovers offering great fishing, diving, boating and world-class beaches.

The dramatic casting landscape is due to the Tropic of Cancer that runs directly through the island and offers two very different coastlines, breathtaking cliffs and caves on the east coast facing the Atlantic Ocean and the sandy west side on The Bahamas Bank.

Long Island is rich in history with historic twin churches built in 1800s designed by Father Jerome Hawes, the deepest (600 ft) blue hole in the world known as Dean’s Blue Hole and one of the largest caves in The Bahamas, Hamilton’s Cave.  On the northern most tip of the island, North Long Island, stands a memorial to Christopher Columbus, a 15 ft tall stone obelisk since it is believed that Long Island was his third stop on his first voyage.  The first two stops were San Salvador and Rum Cay.

Most of the island’s settlements are named after the families that first settled them with Clarence Town as the capitol which is where the twin churches are located.   Deadman’s Cay is the major settlement of Long Island located at the center of the island where the Deadman’s Cay airport is located.

Dean’s Blue Hole is at Turtle Cove just west of the capitol, there are many other blue holes throughout the island, namely in Mileys, Dumore and Simms.

Cape Santa Maria is the northern most point and where Columbus landed.  Cape Santa Maria has one of the world’s best 10 beaches! Long Island also has numerous caves and tunnel systems including one in Mortimer’s where the Lucayan Indian Tribe and their treasure artifacts were found but the largest and historical Hamilton’s Cave is named after the town its in, Hamilton’s.  Inside Hamilton’s Cave still visible on the cave walls are hieroglyphics.

Adderley Plantation and Dunmore Slave Plantation are where you will find many ruins of cotton plantations, churches and houses built in in the 1700 & 1800’s. Long Island showcases breathtaking geography, pristine sandy white beaches, hidden treasures and lots of adventure.

Great place to visit and to live if you want to enjoy the relaxing laid back island life!
